My friends and family know how critical I am of the media and how journalism has been completely whored out to the highest bidder. I am not unique in this opinion, but as a journalist-by-degree (and by degree only) one can understand why the downward spiral of integrity in the media is frustrating to someone like me. Carlo Longino laments on his blog that "journalism is broken" and describes some possible solutions.

The younger generation is always better at stuff than the older generation. You see it in their schooling, in sports, music ... you name it. We were a step better than our parents, and our kids are a step (or four, in my case) better than us. In some areas, however, the "skill increase" seems to be unrelated to any improvement in "training". For the most part, it just seems ... evolutionary.

From the "That's Pretty Durn Neat!" department, Beatnik Turtle (my band) has been written up in an article in Billboard Magazine (the online version anyway - I'm not sure it it's in the print version, but I suspect it is). I tend to play cards close, so this will not graduate to the "Really F***ing Exciting!" category until *something* (to be determined by moi) happens. Still, it's a noteworthy event for the band.

I cannot believe how soft and avoidant the customer service industry has become! Pointing the finger of blame instead of trying to help. Bailing out on a conversation the moment it becomes clear that the customer is frustrated. The Help Desk is officially the CYA desk -- that's all they do now.
